To me, belonging is just being able to be yourself and know you won’t be judged, to be supported without feeling like a burden and most importantly, feeling as though you are surrounded by family always. I took photographs of my beautiful friends in the places they feel they most belong; their bedrooms, each one uniquely decorated in a way that encompasses their personalities.

Locks From Liverpool to Bristol, and from winter to spring, anyone and everyone who has placed a lock with someone has thought they belong with them. Whether they are friends, family or partners, whether they have gone their separate ways or are still close they have chosen to show their bond through the physical format of a lock. While it may seem like a small minute gesture, a lock has historically been used to show two peoples connection and sense of belonging to each other.

Cat on the Box This is my cat, Penelope. Despite having multiple comfortable beds, she insists that she belongs on any and all boxes.

Safety in Numbers Many animals belong in herds, flocks, pods, packs etc, sticking together to protect themselves from predators, to help find food and to share the labour of raising young. Both of these sets of animals are in safe areas where the risk of predators is low yet the natural instinct to herd together is still apparent. Despite it not always being necessary, it is in these animals’ DNA that they belong together.

Natural Split Two trees split in two, two halves of a whole, two halves that belong together. Despite being two separate trees, the captured photo subject looks like one that has been split in two. The natural world, despite almost never being identical, has produced two trees that simply belong together.

These images remind me of belonging because it can be about a person, someone you see within a crowd who you feel you belong with. Dancing also reminds me of the theme because you can feel like you belong within the music. Belonging can also be found in being with others and feeling protected, like two people sat together beneath an umbrella who belong with each other.

These photographs I took remind me of holidays spent with my family, and the feeling that came with being there together. They capture what it’s like to have a place you feel like you belong to.

This photograph captures a bus that has been turned into something more than a means of getting somewhere. Surrounded by plants and signs of life, it feels claimed by people, and by filling places with our things and people we love we make them our own. Maybe the real belonging comes from within and the human ability/nature to change the space around us.

Sitting Pretty These photographs capture three of my friends in a student house. I think I will look back on these years as some of the happiest of my life. Somewhere in late nights in each other’s living rooms I feel like I’m slowly figuring out where I fit and belong in the world. I don’t think I can fully understand how exactly these years are shaping me while I’m living them, but one day I’ll look back on these moments and realise how much of the person I’ve become began here.

She Doesn’t Know She’s Not Alone One photograph was taken in Poland, the other in Liverpool. Two girls alone and unaware of how much of the world is still waiting for them. As they grow, they will begin to understand that there is a place for them in the universe, that there are people they haven’t met yet who will make them feel at home, places they haven’t been yet where they will find themselves.

I took these photographs on my first night in Morocco. On this night, we brought some street food to the beach, listened to the families around us having barbecues and drinking and laughing, and listened to traditional Moroccan music. I just admired the sense of belonging that the locals had with each other and the way they connected with each other, and I felt so special to be a part of it.
